New Emergency Hospital of Juiz de Fora

HPS Dr. Mozart Teixeira — Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil

The New Emergency Hospital of Juiz de Fora transforms an existing large-scale healthcare complex into a fully integrated emergency, surgical and inpatient facility. The project was developed from multidisciplinary technical studies, building assessments and operational planning aimed at completing, adapting and activating the former regional hospital structure.

Set on a 44,000 m² urban site, the complex comprises approximately 29,670 m² of built area and is organized into four interconnected blocks. This linear configuration establishes clear relationships between emergency care, diagnostics, surgery, intensive care, inpatient units, administration and operational support.

The healthcare program provides 143 hospital beds, including intensive care, general surgery, orthopedics and trauma, internal medicine, psychiatry, pediatrics and isolation accommodation. Specialized areas include operating rooms, diagnostic imaging, clinical laboratories, central sterile services, pharmacy, physiotherapy, outpatient consultation rooms and high-complexity emergency care.

A central objective of the design was the rigorous separation of circulation systems. Public and visitor routes, patient movement, restricted clinical circulation and service logistics were organized independently, reducing operational conflicts and supporting infection control, security and efficient medical workflows. Access points are distributed between Rua Coronel Vidal and Rua Henrique Burnier, with dedicated connections for pedestrians, vehicles, services and emergency operations.

The proposal also integrates a dedicated SAMU pre-hospital emergency area, a helipad, technical infrastructure, fire-water storage, accessible routes, landscaped courtyards and permeable outdoor areas. Parking capacity was expanded beyond the minimum requirement, with accessible, elderly and motorcycle spaces incorporated into the site plan.

The architectural identity combines a clear institutional presence with environmental comfort. Perforated façade screens provide solar protection and visual unity, while internal gardens, shaded circulation areas and extensive landscaping create a more welcoming setting for patients, staff and visitors.

Through coordinated healthcare planning, architecture, engineering and urban integration, the project establishes a resilient public hospital capable of supporting complex emergency operations while delivering an accessible, efficient and human-centered care environment.
